Kava’s roots
Kava, AKA Kava Kava, is a small shrub in the nightshade plant family. It’s grown in and native to the Pacific Islands, like Hawaii and Fiji. Yep, this little shrub lives where you vacation.
For centuries, Pacific islanders have used Kava in ceremonies, social rituals, and for medicinal purposes. More recently, Kava has gotten plenty of buzz about its naturally relaxing and stress-reducing abilities.
What does Kava do?
The combination of Kava’s main ingredients, kavalactones, are what naturally relaxes the mind and body, while inducing a sense of calm and euphoria. In clinical studies, Kava has shown to significantly decrease feelings of perceived anxiety, without any dependency on the plant.

Is Kava for you?
IF YOU’RE NEW TO KAVA, THERE’S SOME THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE CONSUMING IT
First things first: safety and side effects. If you’re looking to learn more about Kava, you might stumble upon some research that suggests Kava is bad for your liver and health. This comes from a 20+ year old study in Switzerland and Germany that has since been reviewed and refuted.
When researchers revisited the data of the original study, they learned that cases of liver toxicity were likely a result of Kava being mixed with other substances known to negatively affect liver function. On top of that, parts of the Kava plant that aren’t meant for use in drinks were also likely used.
So, the short answer is, yes, according to studies Kava is safe to drink for healthy adults, but don’t overdo it. As the saying goes, “too much of anything isn’t a good thing.” Just be cautious of how much Kava you consume. Most experts recommend that you take no more than 500 milligrams of kavalactones per day (that’s more than two servings of Ü Relax).
Because Kava is a naturally relaxing supplement, it’s recommended to avoid driving or operating machinery after consumption. We also suggest keeping Kava away from children, pregnant women, or nursing moms.
If you have or have had liver problems, take medication or still aren’t sure about Kava, reach out to your healthcare provider before taking it.
All in all, there’s more research to be done on this plant. But for now, you can sit back, relax, and enjoy Kava in moderation.
